In July 2000, Debra Cherrie, together with the late Michael Taussig QC, established the firm Taussig Cherrie & Associates, now Taussig Cherrie Fildes.
She is one of only eight family lawyers in Australia, and one of only five in Melbourne, to be ranked preeminent by Doyle’s Guide 2022. She has been in legal practice since 1980, initially in Western Australia, and since 1984, in Victoria.
Debra has extensive experience in complex financial property disputes and aims always for a tax and cost effective outcome for clients. She has particular expertise in drafting financial agreements including pre-nuptial agreements for protection of multi-generational wealth.
Debra served 10 years on the Family Law Advisory Committee to the Accreditation Board of the Law Institute of Victoria and was a sessional member of the Legal Practice List of the Civil Division of the Victorian Civil & Administrative Tribunal. She has previously served on several committees of the Law Institute of Victoria including its Executive, Courts Practice and Collaborative Practice committees.
Debra has written several articles and papers covering diverse areas of family law including international child abduction, child support, setting aside transactions to defeat claims, injunctions, third-party interests, financial agreements, bankruptcy and taxation issues, and with the late Michael Taussig QC, was previously a co-editor of the professional journal “Current Family Law”.
